Native Copper/ Float Copper/
This page lists native copper which is found in many forms and from various formations. Copper can be found in matrix, nuggets, sheet, vein, float, smelted, Types of formations include igneous, sedimentary, including conglomerate.
Each copper mine in Michigan is unique due to its mix of other metals and various types of minerals. There were over 800 copper mines in the Y00per, which extend from the southern end in Ontonagon County all the way up to the Keweenaw Peninsula. If you want a thrill you need to come copper and silver hunting up here, no one ever leaves disappointed. I also have copper specimens from various parts of the world from several consignee’s.
Is a very nice branch of elongated copper crystals from the Drexel mine Keweenaw County Michigan. This mine is known more for datolites than it is copper leaf crystals. Very few of these specimens are found there. It has a very nice oxidized patina and is 6.0x3.5x0.7xcmand weighs 15 grams. Item #G120, cost is $45 sold
B461 This is a great copper amygdule formation specimen from the Kearsarge lode. Nice branching segments with majority being a rounded shape. There is also a few traces of chrysocolla on it as well. It weighs in at 37 grams. Item #B461, cost is $75
Is a very nice specimen of CH mines native copper from a conglomerate lode. It has multiple wide spaces where the conglomerate was mixed with the copper. There is also small areas of calcite as well. There must have been a silver knob on the one end as it was chiseled off. Super nice piece weighs in at 1.22 pounds.

A very nice copper crystal specimen that is 100% crystals of various types. It also has a small spot of quartz still attached to one crystal and the quartz has a bit of green mineral in it. I only know it came from Houghton County and weighs 14 grams.
A nice chunk of float copper from Houghton County Michigan. I left the natural patina on it as some like them as found and others like to polish raised knobs to a high polish. There is some of the original patina still in the piece of float. It weighs in at 3.33 pounds.

Another nice piece of float copper from Houghton County. This piece would look awesome if the knobs were polished. It has an almost total green patina with small areas of original matrix with it. It weighs in at 1.88 pounds.
A very nice specimen of mostly native copper with a bit of basalt matrix and small spots of quartz. It has micro sized sponge copper, and large copper crystalline shapes that have squared off edges. It also has several nice crystal depressions in it as well. It weighs in at 2.79 pounds.

Is a nice copper crystal specimen from the Baltic mine in South Range Michigan. It has two separate arms that connect at two places. This specimen weighs in at 16 grams.

Is a rare and hard to find pyrite cube from the White Pine Mine in Ontonagon County. A super nice all crystals specimen that weighs in at 21 grams.

A nice copper crystal specimen from the Northwest mine. It has multiple arms and there is still a bit of matrix and quartz with the specimen and it weighs in at 7 grams.

Is a central mine copper crystalline and crystal specimen. Very nice and clean. The one arm actually bends over into a semi fold. This specimen weighs 29 grams.

This is a super nice copper crystal tree from the famous Central mine in Keweenaw County Michigan. It is 13.5x10.3x0.3 cm and weighs in at 67 grams or 2.4 ounces. It has the original great patina. It has very nice sharp copper crystals.

A nice sheet of native copper from the white pine mine in Michigan. This is a unique mine in Michigan as it was formed in a sedimentary formation. It has flattened copper crystals on one side, and the other side is very smooth. It also has scattered areas of calcite and shale as well. Has loads of character with the hole in the center. It weighs in at 9 ounces.

This lot consists of two pieces of native copper from the white pine mine in Michigan. The one seam copper is all copper and has copper crystals bent or flattened. The other seam copper also has calcite and shale. It also has flattened crystals on it. They are both around 8” long, and the total weigh of both totals 7.7 ounces. Nice specimens for a unique sedimentary copper formation mine.

This is a hard to get specimen from the Prospect Point area near Copper Harbor Michigan. The small area was mined from what I can find out from locals. It is a nice set of 4 copper crystals. The outer two or more “cubed” shaped, whereas the two center are pointed. The largest crystal actually sits atop two other crystals which extend from the base. It has areas of what looks like
chrysocolla, with several small areas looking gemmy in color. There is also a smooth rounded impression on the back side of the smallest crystal. Lots of unique aspects to this big copper specimen. This is a large crystal set that weighs in at 1.26 pounds.

A nice assortment of various shaped copper crystals on this specimen from the phoenix mine. Right next to the largest shaped crystals you have some squared shaped as well. It also has some very nice quartz crystals on the whole backside which adds even more to the specimen. It weighs 26 grams, he paid $75 for this specimen in july 2009 and they are from the peter gillis collection.

Is a nice native copper specimen from the Bill Turin collection, Mass City Michigan. It has multiple colors on this piece of seam copper. It is 6 inches long and weighs 4.9 ounces.

Is a nice copper crystal specimen from the white pine copper mine which is a sedimentary formation that has copper. This 3” + inch specimen is actually all crystals. The great aspect on this specimen is that it is all copper crystals in many types of crystal shapes.Under a loop, it is awesome looking. There is also a micro dog tooth calcite crystal on it. It weighs in at 18 grams.

Is native copper from Gerilambone New South Wales Australia. It is a very nice specimen showing lots of dendritic looking string crystals along with other copper crystal shapes across its entire lenght. It weighs in at 88 grams.

A super nice grouping of native copper crystals from the Mohawk Mine in Keweenaw County, Michigan. The base consists of all smaller crystals with the larger sized end the back of the specimen. There is two larger crystals on the one side. It is a little over ¾” long and weighs 7 grams.A very nice sample from a now closed and off limits mine.

This is a super nice long strand of native copper crystals from the Champion mine in Houghton County, Michigan. Excellent miniature of modified tetrahexahedrons. Nice sharp and displays well. From the Robert Heyrman Collection 6.7x3.8x1.7cm, and weighs 7 grams and is and is just shy of 3” in length. Great addition to any native copper collection. Consignee paid $135 for this specimen back in Nov 2009 from the Robert Heyrman collection.

A very unusual piece of native copper from the Poteryaevskoe Mine, Rubtsovskoe, Western-Siberian, Russian Federation. Look at this unique specimen with a lens, you see multiple shaped crystals, stacked in grouping after grouping as far as you can see into the specimen. It also has one pyramid shaped crystal which is the main focal spot on this nice specimen. It weighs in at 160 grams, or 5.6 ounces. Consignee paid 140 Euros for this specimen in 2009.

Is a delicate group of fine native copper crystals from the Mount Isa Mines in outback Queensland. The specimen is made up of a series of crystallized branches of copper with a brown to green patina and with malachite sprays adhering in places, the green patina appears to be predominately nantokite. The specimen is 2’ long ,a weighs 15 grams.

Is a nice grouping of twin copper crystals hooked together by one lower crystal.You can clearly see through the twined crystal. It is from the eagle harbor township which is the area very north, up by copper harbor. Not much copper comes from that area and weighs 42 grams.

Is a solid cluster of native copper crystals from the Girilambone Mine Nyngan NSW Australia. Both sides show just solid copper crystals. There is a small bit of a light green mineralization as well as a small area that is the color of a light brown limonite color. It is 1 ¾”x1 ½” and weighs in at 71 grams, or 2.5 ounces.

This is a nice native copper quartz and prehnite from the west vein of the pewabic amygdaloid lode at the quincy mine in Houghton county. There are some small copper crystals and some have a dark purple coating, some red, and some black, a very unusal piece. There is some copper inclusions in some of the quartz. Lots of colors and mineral mixtures on this specimen. It weighs in at 5.7 ounces

A nice grouping of copper crystals with silver from the white pine mine in Ontanogon County. This has crystals ranging from very small to larger ones at the other end. There is silver spots along multiple spots on the edges of the crystals. This great specimen weighs in at 2.7 ounces.

A very nice cluster of copper crystals from the Empire/Iron City mine, Keweenaw County. Excellent miniature with stalks of elongated and modified dodecs. Chalcocite is also present on some of the crystals. 3.2x2.7x1.3cm, and weighs 14 grams.$90 sold
Is a very rare copper crystal grouping copper falls mine #3 fissure from the gribble vein which was mined from the 1860s to 1880s. This sample was collected Oct 1978 with great documentation. It has great crystals that extend from one end to the other. There is also some very small spots of quartz. Very hard to find sample from this mine fissure. It weighs in at 2.2 ounces.

Is a two piece set of nice copper crystals from the Phoenix mine in Keweenaw County. Both have great copper crystals, and the pictures do not really capture the real nice looking crystals. These specimens weigh in at 1.5 ounces.

A nice specimen of native copper from the Copper Queen mine in Bisbee, Cochise County, Ariz from the angel Gomez collection.
This was collected in the 1950s and is a rarer type of coper crystals. They are see crystals of coper and it seems the copper had replaced (presudomorphed) to cuprite crystals. Item weighs in at 18 grams.
